What we keep about you

Your analysis stays in your own browser

Everything you enter on this site, the problem statement, the causes, the countermeasures, is held in your own browser storage and never reaches our server. Not when you save, not when you share, and not when you print. We cannot look at your analyses, cannot restore them and cannot hand them to anyone else, not even if we wanted to.

That is not a promise but a property of how the site is built: there is no address on our server that accepts the content of an analysis.

Two consequences you should know about:

• If you clear your browser data, your analyses are gone. We have no copy and cannot recover anything.
• To take an analysis to another computer or to a colleague, use a file or a share link that carries the content itself.

Who is responsible

Qualitysign is the controller for Grondoorzaak.nl. Privacy questions can be sent to privacy@qualitysign.nl. Security reports go to security@qualitysign.nl.

No account, no email address

You can use this site fully without an account. There is no login screen, we do not ask for an email address and we do not send you anything.

What we do process

Three things, all of them on the server:

• A visitor count, explained below.
• A request limit, using the same irreversible code, to stop anyone inflating the counter with a script. It disappears after a day.
• The web server logs, which hold your IP address and the page requested. We keep those for seven days so that faults and abuse can be investigated.

How we count visitors

We want to know how many people use the site. That can be done without a cookie and without storing your IP address.

On your first visit of the day we compute an irreversible code from your IP address and your browser version, using a secret number that is replaced every day. Only that code is stored, together with the date. If the same code has already been seen today, you are not counted again.

After two days we erase both that daily number and the codes. What remains are two counts per day: how many unique visitors there were and how many analyses were started. Those counts say nothing about who you are.

To be straight about what does exist: for at most forty-eight hours there is a record that could be linked back to you by someone holding that daily number as well as your IP address and your browser version. After that it is impossible, for us too.

Why we are allowed to process this

On the basis of our legitimate interest. We want to know whether the site is being used and we want to prevent abuse. We do not ask your consent for this, because we place nothing on your device for this purpose and because the processing is minimal and short-lived. If you disagree, you can object; see your rights below.

Cookies

We use no cookies. There is therefore no cookie banner on this site and there are no settings for you to click through.

The site does use your browser storage to keep your own analyses. That is not a cookie and it goes nowhere: it is where your work lives, and it is needed to deliver what you asked for. You can erase it yourself at any time with the "Erase everything" button on the My cases page.

Where your data actually sits

Your analyses are held in your browser's local storage, tied to the address of this site. You will find them under two kinds of key:

• gz:v1:index for the list of your cases
• gz:v1:case: followed by a number, one for each case

Three things follow from that:

• It is stored per browser and per device. What you create in Chrome on your laptop is not in Firefox on your phone. Nothing is synchronised.
• In a private window everything disappears the moment you close that window.
• Anyone else who can reach the same browser on your computer can open your analyses. On a shared computer, erase them when you are done.

How to remove everything yourself

Three ways, from easy to entirely independent of us.

Inside the site

The My cases page has an Erase everything button. It removes every case from this browser, immediately and irreversibly. You can also use the Delete button on an individual case.

Through your browser settings, without opening this site

Every browser has a screen where you can inspect and remove stored data per site. The exact wording differs per version, but the route is roughly:

• Chrome and Edge: Settings, Privacy and security, Cookies and other site data, See all site data and permissions. Find grondoorzaak.nl and click the bin icon.
• Firefox: Settings, Privacy and Security, Cookies and Site Data, Manage Data. Find grondoorzaak.nl and choose Remove Selected.
• Safari on the Mac: Safari, Settings, Privacy, Manage Website Data. Find grondoorzaak.nl and choose Remove.
• Safari on iPhone or iPad: Settings, Apps, Safari, Advanced, Website Data. Find grondoorzaak.nl and swipe left.

Clearing your browsing data in general works too, but that affects every site.

Through the developer tools, if you want to see exactly what is there

Press F12 (on a Mac: Option, Command and I). Go to the Application or Storage tab and open Local Storage, then the address of this site. You will see every key and its contents literally, and you can erase them one by one or all at once. This is also how you can check for yourself that what we claim here is true.

What is on our server

For completeness, because a promise without a way to check it is just a promise: our server holds four tables. One with counts per day, one with the daily number used for the visitor count, one with the irreversible codes from that count, and one for the request limit. Beyond that, the ordinary web server logs and an error log that holds technical messages only, with no request content.

There is no address on our server that accepts the content of an analysis. That is locked down by a test in the source code, so it cannot change by accident either.

Sharing with others

We do not sell data and we show no advertising.

A share link contains your whole analysis, packed into the address itself. That content does not pass through our server, because the part after the hash is never sent along by your browser. But anyone holding the link can open it, and it ends up in the history of every browser and in every conversation you paste it into. Share it only with the people you intend to.

Our advice while filling things in: describe people by their role rather than by their name. It keeps the analysis useful and it keeps personal data out of your export and your share link.

Who else can see your data

Our hosting provider supplies the server the site runs on and is a processor; we have agreements with that party about security and confidentiality. Nobody else is involved.

There are no external scripts on this site, no advertising networks and no third-party analytics. Everything the page loads comes from our own domain.

Your rights

You have the right of access, rectification and erasure, the right to restrict processing, the right to object and the right to data portability.

In practice there is little to carry out, and that is because we keep so little. Your analyses are with you and not with us, so you can view, change, take and erase them yourself. The visitor count cannot be linked to you, so we cannot extract any data about you from it, not even if you ask. That is not a refusal but a consequence of the design.

If you want to object to the counting, let us know. We will gladly explain exactly what happens and weigh it up again.

If you disagree with how we handle your data, tell us at privacy@qualitysign.nl. You also always have the right to lodge a complaint with the Autoriteit Persoonsgegevens, the Dutch supervisory authority.
